Description:
WHCA's Helping Hands Garage helps income eligible people acquire safe, affordable transportation for commuting to work and accessing medical services. Buyers receive training in defensive driving, insurance, maintenance, child safety seats, and budgeting, while developing good credit histories so they will qualify for loans from mainstream lenders. Vehicle donors help others be self sufficient and receive a tax credit for their effort.
History:
Since 1966, Washington Hancock Community Agency (WHCA) has been providing programs and services to people in rural eastern Maine. We combat poverty by connecting low income individuals with local, state, and federal resources. A volunteer board of directors governs our private, non-profit community action agency. Our board is equally represented by members of the public, private, and elected sectors, and includes people with low incomes. Helping Hands Garage is one of WHCA's newest programs. It has been operational for a little over one year, starting out with virtually nothing and presently operating with a full time program manager and part time administrative assistant. More volunteers are very much needed specifically for the Helping Hands Garage Program.
