The purpose of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to make a positive difference in the lives of children through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with volunteer mentors. The goal of the program is to assist children in achieving their highest potential, as they grow to become confident, competent and caring individuals.

Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides volunteer mentors to children, ages 7-14, who are in need of additional support and friendship. Volunteers are caring adults or high school students with whom children can share experiences, conversations, and friendship. All relationships are one-to-one. Mentors and children meet in the community or at schools. All volunteers are screened and trained and each mentoring relationship receives ongoing support from Big Brothers Big Sisters staff. All services are free to families and volunteers. Participation is voluntary.

History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Maine was founded in 1998 as a program of Downeast Health Services, Inc. It is an affiliate agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, one of the nation's oldest and most effective youth programs. We currently provide mentors for children in Hancock, Washington, and Penobscot counties.
