Literacy Volunteers provides free one-on-one tutoring and other educational services to help adults in Androscoggin County acquire the basic reading, writing, and math skills they need to enhance their lives and achieve their personal goals.

Description:
LV-A offers five free literacy programs for adults and families with low literacy skills, or English Speakers of other languages. These include basic literacy, home-based family literacy, prison literacy, English for speakers of other languages, and English conversation partners. We serve an average of 200 people per year.

Volunteers from the community who wish to become tutors take our 12 hour tutor training workshop, and are then matched with a student in the program area of their choice. The minimum commitment is one hour per week for one year. Volunteers need have at least a 12th grade reading level and be age 21 or older.

History:
We were established in 1974 as an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America. In 1996, we became a United Way Agency and hired our first director. In 2000, we earned national accreditation through Literacy Volunteers of America.
