Description:
Volunteers participate in the three different areas of our organization, as well as general organizational help. Land stewardship volunteers help with trail work, building new trails and repairing existing ones in our four public preserves. Water quality volunteers sample the lakes and ponds in the watershed for lake health and at Pemaquid Beach through the Healthy Beaches program to ensure that the water is safe for swimmers. Education volunteers work with school children to teach them about nature. We go into the school, take students on field trips and work in the Beachcombers' Rest Nature Center at Pemaquid Beach during the summer.
History:
The PWA has its origins in the Biscay Pond Association (BPA), formed in 1966 by residents concerned about unregulated local land development. The BPA gradually grew in response to the interests and concerns of landowners throughout the Pemaquid River watershed and changed its name in 1973 to reflect the broader geographic scope. Spurred by unprecedented land development pressures, PWA became a land trust in 1988. As a land trust, PWA uses conservation easements and land acquisition to protect the beauty and natural integrity of the watershed. PWA is a volunteer-driven, membership-supported organization with over 700 members, one full-time staff position (Executive Director), and two part-time, seasonal staff positions (Education Coordinator/AmeriCorps Member and Nature Center Naturalist).
