The mission of Gary's House is to provide comfortable and affordable housing to families with hospitalized loved-ones in the Portland area.
Description:
When out-of-town families have a loved-one in a Portland area hospital, Gary's House can offer them an affordable place to stay that is safe, comfortable and convenient to local medical facilities. Gary's House has nine-private bedrooms, a free laundry facility for guest use, a fully equipped kitchen, playroom, family room, living area, library and dining area.
Referrals are made through the Social Services department at all Portland area hospitals. The suggested rate is $15 per night, per room.
History:
Gary Pike was 18 years-old when he was diagnosed with two different types of cancer. For the next two years, he fought this disease. His family watched helplessly as their only son struggled to survive. When traditional treatments failed, they tried experimental treatments in Boston. They were a family of modest means, and they found frequently they could not afford the cost of a hotel, so they resorted to sleeping on the floor of Gary's hospital room, or in waiting room chairs, to stay by his side. As a result of his illness, they suffered severe financial setbacks and lost their home. But this only made them stronger. They became determined to insure that other families would not have to face the same hardship and the idea for Gary's House was born. After Gary's death in 1991, his family, friends and community rallied to raise funds for Gary's House. Seven years later, in December of 1998, Gary's House opened on State Street in Portland, ME.
