As Northern Maine's premier year-round professional theatre company, Penobscot Theatre is dedicated to achieving artistic excellence while developing and presenting works of theatre that inspire the imagination and cultivate a lifelong passion for the art form. We do this by presenting challenging and innovative stagings of plays and musicals new and classic.

The Penobscot Theatre Guild is a group of volunteers who support the theatre.

Description:
What is the Penobscot Theatre Guild?

The Penobscot Theatre Guild consists of volunteers who share a love of theatre and wish to maintain professional theatre in the Bangor community and surrounding areas. Guild members have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, which include advocating for live theatre, ushering for Penobscot Theatre productions, staffing fundraising events, assisting with administrative tasks, and working behind-the-scenes with our production crew.

Who can join?

Anyone who is interested in theatre and is willing to donate their time and creative ideas can participate in the Penobscot Theatre Guild.

Why should I join?

Guild members not only fulfill their personal goals by contributing time and energy to Penobscot Theatre, but they have the opportunity to participate in a variety of exciting activities. Members-only benefits include exclusive “Meet the Actors” and other pre-show events, designer presentations, invitations to closed play readings, discount and free show tickets, and much more!

How can I learn more?

For more information or to join the Guild, please contact Elizabeth Anderson at 947-6618 or elizabeth@penobscottheatre.org.

History:
Penobscot Theatre started in 1973 by George Vafiades and Lou Collier as the Acadia Repertory. Penobscot Theatre Company was incorporated as a 501(c) 3 on March 17, 1983. The School for Wives was the first play officially produced by the PTC.

In 1986, the greater Bangor community helped Penobscot Theatre raise $160,000 for the purchase and initial renovation of the beautiful 1888 parish house at 183 Main Street that it had been renting from a neighboring church. The Theatre sold the parish house to Merrill Bank in 2004.

Penobscot Theatre acquired the Bangor Opera House in 1997, which now serves as the company's base of operations. The Bangor Opera House, located at 131 Main Street, is the last remaining theatre in downtown Bangor, a community which supported 7 such venues in the first part of the 20th Century. The Opera House was built in 1920 and is an early example of Art Deco/Egyptian Revival architecture.

In 2005, current Producing Artistic Director Scott R.C. Levy was hired to lead the theatre into its fourth decade.
