Spring 2008 Hospice Volunteer Training
Last updated on January 4, 2008
Logo

Hospice Volunteers provide non-medical aide and support to terminally ill individuals and their families. Support includes: practical task-oriented care, respite, and active listening. Practical things might include running errands, light housework, cooking a meal, walking the dog, putting together a photo album or memory book, writing letters or helping complete a project. Volunteers also provide respite care so that families/caregivers can have a much-needed break for themselves. Perhaps most importantly, volunteers are excellent listeners, allowing a patient/family member to talk about their sadness, fear, anger or concerns as they move through this difficult period. Volunteers also help facilitate life review with patients, helping the individual understand that their life had meaning and made a difference.

Those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer must complete a pre-training interview, a 40-hour accredited hospice volunteer training course, and a post-training interview. This comprehensive training course is offered at no cost in the winter, spring and fall. Trainings currently take place on four Fridays from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and three half-day Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - Noon. Hospice of Southern Maine volunteers make a commitment to give 4 hours per week to a patient/family, typically two 2-hour visits per week.
