First Night® seeks to foster public appreciation of visual and performing arts through an innovative, diverse and high quality New Year's Eve program which provides a shared cultural experience, accessible and affordable to all. This is done in an alcohol-free environment. We provide 9 hours of diverse entertainment in 15 venues in downtown Westport on New Year's Eve, including circus, music, dancing, facepainting, drumming, comedy, Bingo, hands-on crafts, horse-drawn carriage rides, bonfire, food, and community sing alongs. We start at 3 PM and end with a spectacular Midnight Fireworks.
Description:
First Night® Westport/Weston is in its 14th year of families celebrating New Year's Eve together. We use public venues in Westport and Weston and provide entertainment geared toward children, teens, young adults, families, and senior citizens. We really do provide something for everyone, including fireworks at midnight. It is attended by over 5,000 people each year and we need volunteers at all our venues. We also need pre-planning volunteers.
History:
The first First Night® Westport/Weston was in 1994. In 1976, Boston was the first city to adopt the idea with the intention of bringing the communities of that town together to celebrate in an alcohol-free, drug-free environment. There are now 130 First Night cities internationally. Celebrating the passage of time from the old year to the new in a safe and sober environment is a huge attraction for most people.
