Our mission is to support the Norwalk Public Library System's delivery of services to the public. We do this by holding semi-annual booksales. The work involved in conducting booksales includes separating donated books into more than 25 categories - for example, fiction, travel, foreign language, mystery. We also participate in supporting various programs during the year, such as political debates, family concerts, and author visits. Our overriding vision is to encourage free access to information.
Description:
We are a group of dues-paying members, with a volunteer board. We hold semi-annual book sales to raise funds to provide extras for the two libraries in the system. These "extras" include computers and printers, landscaping, children's programs, etc. We work with the library administration to determine the best way to use the funds we raise. We also publish a Friends' newsletter two or three times a year. The Friends' base of operations is the Main Branch Library on Belden Avenue. We have designated space within the building for sorting and storing books throughout the year in advance of our sales. The Friends Board meets in the Main Branch Library at 7 PM on the first non-holiday Monday of the month, September through June.
History:
This local Friends group has been in existence for about 20 years. Recently, we donated $20,000 for a computer lab in the Main Branch. The lab is used for internal training, as well as public computer training programs. Another recent highlight was receiving a PIN Award, in 2001, for the lovely effect of the fencing we provided to the Main Branch on Belden Avenue. Finally, in 2003, we sponsored the landscaping project at the entrance on Belden Avenue, to create an appealing first impression for new patrons, and a warm welcome for all of us.
