Description:
Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) is the only national voluntary health agency that provides support and services to persons with Huntington's Disease (HD) and their families through a national/regional structure. HDSA is committed to funding research that will lead to improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure. HDSA supports 17 major HD laboratories in North America and Europe through the HDSA Coalition for the Cure and provides 23 grants and fellowships to young investigators just starting out in the field of HD research. HDSA also leads in providing care for HD patients and their families at our 21 Centers of Excellence. HDSA's 12 regions and 37 chapters and affiliates and 150+ support groups help educate the general public and healthcare professionals. In Connecticut, Yale/New Haven and UCONN Health Center's HD Program provide genetic testing services, support and research trials for HD families. There are 3 support groups located in different parts of the state. This dedicated circle of people provide networking and information and create fundraising opportunities through a wide range of exciting and worthwhile events around the state.
History:
HDSA was founded in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie when her husband, Woody Guthrie, the legendary American folksinger, lost his long and painful battle with HD. The Ct Chapter was started in 1993 but merged with the New England Chapter in 2005, when a volunteer Board of Directors could not be replaced. This past January, to celebrate HDSA's 40th anniversary, a CT Regional Development Director was hired to focus resources and efforts on raising awareness, funds and recruiting an appropriate and viable board of directors in CT to best support the hundreds of people in CT affected by Huntington's Disease.
