The purpose of the Godfrey Memorial Library is to promote the study of family history by: -Inspiring the study of family heritage and its place in history. -Supporting educational activities that create enthusiasm for family research. -Making genealogical and historical resources available on a national and international level by continuing the expansion, modernization, and distribution of the collection of print, electronic manuscript and other information media as technology develops.
History:
The Godfrey Memorial Library first opened its doors in May 1951. It was founded by Fremont Rider who was a well-known publisher, author, inventor, genealogist, and librarian. He was, for many years, librarian at Wesleyan's Olin Library. While in that position, he started putting together the idea for a monumental index that would help genealogists all over the world in their research. That was the beginning of the American Genealogical Biographical Index(AGBI) and the Godfrey Memorial Library. The Library was built not only to house thousands of genealogy and local history books, but also as a publishing company. The AGBI, is a master index of over 800 genealogically related research books and it is sold to major libraries and universities all over the world. The Godfrey does not receive funds from any local, state, or federal agency. Although it is privately owned library, it is open to the public six days a week, free of charge. We are here to be of service to anyone researching their family history. We presently have approximately 20,000 books all related to local history (local areas throughout the United States) family histories and biographies with the majority of our information being pre-1900. Currently, Godfrey Memorial Library has entered the technological world of genealogy. It now offers a subscription service of online databases designed to assist researchers. To the databases, for which contracts have been made with the agencies who own them, the Library is planning to add databases of its own, created from resources owned by the Godfrey Memorial Library. Members of the Board of Trustees are committed to keeping our doors open free of charge and encourage all who seek to find their ancestors to use the library and its resources.
