The mission of LVCC is to promote and foster increased literacy in the English language through the voluntary teaching of, and free assistance to, anyone older than eighteen years of age who requests help. LVCC accomplishes its mission through the efforts of trained volunteers, who use materials developed by ProLiteracy America, our national accrediting body.
Description:
LVCC's Middletown Program office offers tutor-training sessions to prepare individuals for working with students. After certification, tutors decide to teach students in either the "Basic Literacy" or the "English as a Second Language" category. Tutor are asked to commit to one year of volunteering. Tutors usually meet with their students weekly for about two hours. LVCC staff provides ongoing support and resources. Because our students' goals are quite varied, our tutors often do more than help students achieve greater command of English in its spoken and written forms. Tutors help students to earn U.S. citizenship, receive a high school diploma or GED, obtain a full-time job, get a driver's license, and enter college.
History:
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Middletown was founded in 1980 by a group of local citizens who were concerned about the problem of illiteracy in the Middletown area. In July 2007 LVGM merged with its fellow affiliate in New Britain. The single entity is now known as Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut (LVCC), but the Middletown Program Office continues to serve the same communities that it did prior to the merger: Middletown, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Marlborough, Middlefield, and Portland.
