Advocates for Autism of Massachusetts was formed to address the need for public legislative advocacy on behalf of individuals, families and professionals who have or deal with people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which also encompasses Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning Autism. Our Mission: to strive to assure the human and civil rights of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders and the availability of essential supports so that they may live life fully and enjoy the same opportunities as others throughout the Commonwealth.
Description:
AFAM works collaboratively with the Statewide Autism Coalition and our other Founding Organizations to vigorously advocate each year for adoption of legislative and budgetary priorities by our State government. We host an Autism Awareness Day at the State House, which has been an important vehicle for keeping the needs of our children in the minds and hearts of our elected officials. We are buoyed by the successes we have seen in our first years, including the establishment of the new Division of Autism within the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation, the passage of the Children's Autism Medicaid Waiver legislation and increased funding for family support and the DOE/DMR program.
History:
Fifteen years ago, there were virtually no supports for children and adults with ASDs and their families in Massachusetts. Now there are Autism support centers across the Commonwealth, providing support and services to families with children and adults with ASD. The centers have used their collective power to advocate for individuals with ASD and their families. In 2004, the centers in conjunction with the Arc of Massachusetts and with support from the Flutie Foundation and other autism organizations formed a new organization, Advocates for Autism of Massachusetts (AFAM). This grassroots, membership organization of families and concerned citizens serves as the primary advocacy vehicle protecting the rights and needs of individuals with ASD and their families throughout the state.
