The Haitian Multi-Service Center,the largest social service agency serving the Haitian Community in the Greater Boston area. It is non-profit Its mission is to serve, in a linguistically and culturally sensitive manner, the needs of the Haitian Community, numbered at 25,000-30,000, and to foster economic and social self-sufficiency. Today it serves more than 6,000 families annually.
On-site programs include: Adult Education (Literacy, ESL,GED,EDP[External Diploma Program with the Boston Public Schools], Citizenship, Computer Literacy, Education for Employment), Day Care, Immigration and Refugee Assistance, Food Pantry, Haitian Elders, and an AIDS Support Program.
The Center promotes community development through a "Haitian-serving-Haitians" model. It also reaches out to the broader community by collaborative efforts with other agencies and institutions and through its volunteers from various backgrounds as well as college and university students.
History:
Headquartered on the grounds of the former St. Leo Parish, in the Franklin Field section of Dorchester, the Haitian Multi-Service Center was originally established by local Haitian community leaders in 1978 to respond to the specific needs of this growing immigrant population. It joined Catholic Charities in 1984, thus gaining linkage to the 128 programs in the network. The Center, located at 12 Bicknell St., serves clients living primarily in Dorchester, Mattapan, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury. It has satellite service sites in Cambridge and Mattapan.
