Boston Families for Autism, Inc. (BFA) provides local quality services for families in Boston and surrounding areas who have children with autism spectrum disorders. We stand for the education, empowerment and inclusion of autistic individuals and their families.

Description:
We provide an integrated after-school program that includes art and music therapy and yoga for autistic and typical children. We offer services to families, support groups, mentoring, recreational activities including Special Olympics swimming and tennis, training, and information on the various resources available to families with autistic children in the Boston area.

BFA's focus is primarily on inner-city families who are looking for services for their children.

History:
In 1998, Donna McCoy-Algere and Cynthia Greene, challenged by lack of services and activities for their autistic sons began to assemble lists of resources for autistic families. They incorporated Boston Families for Autism, Inc. (BFA) in January of 1999 and began recruiting families to attend their parent support group meetings at Parent Advisory Council meetings and Boston Public Schools. The support groups began serving 40 Boston area families. In 2000, Based on parent feedback, BFA began offering art and music therapy sessions for area autistic children and in 2001 began a licensed after-school program that offered art and music therapy, reading, etc. for autistic and typical children. To this day, Boston Families for Autism, Inc. is proactive in reaching out to the community to train teachers, recreational directors and the public on the special needs of children with autism. Through partnerships with Special Olympics, they YMCA and other area schools and organizations.
