The Isla Vista Youth Projects, Inc. strengthens our community through diverse educational, recreational and social programs for children and families regardless of income. We envision a community where children are loved, valued, and respected and families are empowered to reach their highest potential.
Description:
The Isla Vista Youth Projects was founded in 1971 in response to the lack of local youth services for children and families living in the low income community of Isla Vista. Programming includes a licensed child care center for 90 infants/toddlers/preschoolers; an after school and summer program for school age children serving 100 children/day; the School Readiness Program to help children enter kindergarten as successful learners and help parents learn how to support their children's education; and the Family Resource Center which provides parent education, resource & referral, counseling and case management. Programs are either free of charge or extremely low cost.
History:
The Isla Vista Youth Projects is located in Isla Vista, where nearly 20,000 people reside in an area less than a square mile in size. This unincorporated, geographically isolated area is home to students, individuals and families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The area is served by a single elementary school where 69% of the children qualify for free/reduced lunches and 53% are English language learners. As a community-based agency providing diverse educational, recreational and social programs for young children and their families.
