Santa Barbara Family YMCA
Last updated on February 6, 2008

The Young Men's Christian Association puts Christian principals into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Character Counts

At the YMCA good character and values are an important part of everything we do. By teaching, enforcing, advocating, and modeling the six pillars of character, we build strong kids, strong families, and a stronger community for all.

Six Pillars of Character Counts

  1. Caring
  2. Citizenship
  3. Fairness
  4. Respect
  5. Responsibility
  6. Trustworthiness
  7. Description:
We are volunteer-led with more than 200 people volunteering on some aspect.
We provide membership and program services to anyone who desires to participate.
    We serve more than 18,000.
We work collaboratively with more than 65 agencies in our community.

    History:
George Williams, born on a farm in 1821, came to London as a sales assistant in a draper's shop, a forerunner of today's department store. He and a group of fellow drapers organized the first YMCA to substitute Bible study and prayer for life on the streets. By 1851 there were 24 Ys in Great Britain, with a combined membership of 2,700. That same year the Y arrived in North America.
