Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara supports individuals with developmental disabilities and their families throughout their life span. Alpha provides services and/or advocates with and on behalf of individuals in the areas of wellness,education,work and community living.
Description:
Alpha Resource Center provides on-site, home and community support to help individuals determine what they want from life and to pursue their own hopes, dreams and goals. Individuals with developmental disabilities want to be treated with dignity and respect, be present and active community members, and be healthy and safe in body, mind and spirit. Alpha embraces the wonderful opportunities and caring support alive in the Santa Barbara community and welcomes volunteers to share their talents, experience and friendship with Alpha and their participants.
History:
Alpha Resource Center was established in 1953 by three families who had children with Down syndrome and wanted an alternative to institutionalization. Over the past 54 years Alpha has evolved into a multi- facited organization that serves, in a variety of capacities, 80% of the individuals with developmental disabilities in Santa Barbara County.
