Body Electric - Santa Barbara
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on November 7, 2007

To promote participation, recognition and celebration of local women and girls in sports and physical activity is Body Electric's mission. In offering opportunities for women and girls to try a new sport or activity taught by women, we hope to inspire confidence to engage in physical activities that will lead to adoption of a healthy lifestyle change that includes regular, but fun exercise. It is also a goal to help women and girls to serve as support and encouragement to one another to sustain involvement in ongoing activities.

Description:
Body Electric - SB was established in 1997 and focuses on encouraging local women and girls to participate in sports activity as a healthy lifestyle choice. Our services to the community include: awarding a college scholarship to a local high school female athlete who has been nominated by her coach for "giving her all" to the sport; donations of books written by or about inspiring female athletes to all south SB county junior high and high school libraries; Title IX "gender equity in sports" advocacy; and sponsorship of Adventure Club clinics taught by female athletes to introduce women and girls to a new sport.

History:
Founded by a group of local women in 1997, Body Electric - SB has been providing opportunities for women and girls to participate in sports and physical activity for ten years. The instructors for our Adventure Club clinics have included women who play on local college basketball, volleyball, and soccer teams, as well as a host of women who teach yoga, fencing, belly dancing, outrigger canoe, boxing, and many other sports and activities. Now into our second decade, we are looking to continue our programs and expand our opportunities for networking with other women and girls who wish to develop and sustain participation in fun, ongoing activities that will encourage adoption of regular exercise as a lifestyle change.
