Approximately 20,000 people reside in the one-half square mile district of Isla Vista, California. With such a dense population, maintaining cleanliness is a major challenge. The Adopt-A-Block Program, started in 1996, aims to help keep the streets of Isla Vista clean by involving the local community in regular clean-up efforts. Removing litter from our streets not only keeps Isla Vista healthy and beautiful, it also reduces the amount of trash on our beaches and in the ocean.
Description:
Adopt-A-Block provides an excellent opportunity for volunteers to get involved in their community. Individuals, UCSB clubs and athletic teams, sororities and fraternities, local high schools, and other local organizations have participated. Adopt-A-Block is funded by UCSB, the Goleta West Sanitary District, and the County of Santa Barbara. In addition, Adopt-A-block offers many business sponsors who are eager to support our volunteers with free meals, items, deals and discounts for weekly participation in our clean-up program.
History:
The Adopt-a-Block program has been extremely effective in achieving its goal of keeping Isla Vista clean, healthy and beautiful. Since 1996, it has properly disposed of an average of 7,000 pounds of trash per academic quarter.
