Arroyo Hondo Preserve
| Last updated on December 29, 2007 |
The Arroyo Hondo Preserve is owned and managed by the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County as a natural and historic preserve. Access for school children, community groups, researchers and the general public is balanced with the primary objective of protecting and enhancing the canyon's sensitive biological and cultural resources.
Description:
This 782 acre preserve on the Gaviota Coast is home to many threatened and endangered species. Our habitat restoration program (first Sunday of each month) offers volunteers the opportunity to help enhance the habitat along the streamside to the benefit of the native plants and animals. Our approximately 9 miles of trails provide visitors access to the preserve's streamside and mountain trails with spectacular views of the coastline and varying habitats. Volunteers work on the third Saturday of each month to keep the trail system in good repair.
History:
The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County is a non-profit organization that works with willing landowners to preserve wildlife habitat, scenic landscapes and agricultural lands from development throughout the county. Since 1985 the Land Trust has helped protect over 20,000 acres. The Arroyo Hondo Preserve was purchased by the Land Trust from the Hollister family in 2001 and is now protected forever and managed as a natural and historic preserve. Visitors are invited to explore its beauty and diversity on the first and third weekends of each month by free reservation.
