Return To Freedom, American Wild Horse Sanctuary

Return to Freedom American Wild Horse Sanctuary provides a safe haven for wild horses, herds and burros who might otherwise be separated, slaughtered, abused, or left to roam without food or water. What sets us apart is that we focus on keeping bonded, natural herd groups together by relocating and re-releasing them at the Sanctuary.

Description:
Return to Freedom American Wild Horse Sanctuary's mandate is unique in combining the keeping of bonded, natural herd groups together; the preservation of rare genetic strains, phenotypes; and the mission to create an American Wild Horse Conservancy and Historical Land Trust. Educational programs and events help to raise awareness and funds. We have a full-time Office Manager, Director of Communications and Development, Director of Education and Outreach, in addition to the Founder, Neda DeMayo. We also have a variety of volunteer opportunities for local volunteers and those from further afield. We offer opportunites for residential work/study volunteers, and are in need of more local volunteers who can commit to regular volunteer work ranging from equine work to office work.

History:
Return to Freedom American Wild Horse Sanctuary was founded in 1997 by Neda DeMayo. The 300 acres on which the sanctuary is currently situated was purchased by the DeMayo family for use as a wild horse sanctuary. Return to Freedom is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation with an ammendment recognizing it as a Living Museum. In 2007 Return to Freedom was awarded a grant by the ASPCA which has enabled it to employ a full-time Education and Outreach Director.

Directions:

Heading out of Lompoc towards Santa Barbara on Highway 1, take a right on Jalama Road. Proceed for 2 miles until you see a white farmhouse on your left and and red barn on your right. Turn right immediately after the red barn where the mailbox is marked '4115.' Drive past the bean field and this driveway will bring you to the offices of Return to Freedom.
