Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Description:
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, or "sweat equity," into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
Habitat for Humanity and its affiliates in more than 3,000 communities in 100 nations have built over 200,000 homes for sale to partner families with no-profit, zero-interest mortgages. The Habitat for Humanity International web site contains more information on Habitat's history, mission, volunteer opportunities and contact information for other Habitat affiliates around the world.
History:
Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County was founded in 2000 and serves the people of Southern Santa Barbara County. Since our inception, we have partnered with numerous non-profits on small projects; we have completed two major renovation projects, and we are now building 3 homes on Via Lucero.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, with individuals, churches and corporate donors providing the money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - called "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
