The mission of César Estrada Chávez Dual Language Immersion Charter School is to develop bi-literate, multi-cultural students whose strong academic and cultural foundation prepare them to meaningfully participate in their families, their community and their world to create a more just and equitable society.
Description:
Program Design Our 50:50 dual language program design is based on nationally researched successful programs. All students learn to read in their primary language first while studying all other subjects in both languages. In third grade students are formally instructed in language arts in their second language. Our students learn the California Content Standards as do all students in the district and state; however, our students develop the vocabulary and concepts in two languages. Student Outcomes Dr. Kathryn Lindholm-Leary of San Jose State University has studied over 15 schools to access students’ progress in Two-Immersion programs. Several of her findings are: Students maintain high levels of proficiency in their first language. Students score at or above grade level in English reading ONE year after English reading is introduced. Students score at or above grade level in English mathematics at all grade levels after English reading is introduced. By fourth and fifth grade, students score higher in English reading and mathematics than students in the regular English program. Students demonstrate high levels of self-esteem and hold positive attitudes toward other languages and cultures.
