The Youth Education Enhancement Program (YEEP) is an after-school education program that operates Monday through Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm year-round at six Peoples’ Self-Help Housing affordable apartment complexes in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Our bi-lingual, bi-cultural, credentialed educators run the program at each site. We are in need of volunteers to assist the children with their school work and help facilitate educational enhancement activities focusing on the arts, science, nutrition and physical education. We currently offer the program at five of our housing sites in Santa Barbara County; two in Carpinteria, one in Santa Barbara, one in Santa Maria and one in Guadalupe.
These are the children of farm workers. Their parents are monolingual Spanish-speakers, and are often unable to help their children with school work. As a result, many of the children are usually behind in school. The goals of the YEEP program are to improve study skills, involve parents in the academic process, improve graduation rates and encourage children to aim for higher education.
For nearly 40 years, Peoples' Self-Help Housing (PSHH) has been committed to addressing the severe affordable housing needs and its accompanying social problems on the Central Coast. Our mission is to provide self-help home ownership, low-income rental housing, as well as youth education, health and community services to low-income families, seniors, and special needs groups on California's Central Coast. To date, we have assisted over 1,000 low-income households to build their first home, and we manage more than 1,200 affordable rental units. PSHH develops vibrant neighborhoods, attractive, high-quality housing, and innovative support services to provide the opportunity for residents to be self-supporting and succeed in life.
Qualifications: The most important qualification is a sincere desire to help children succeed! Beyond that, we are looking for creative, flexible, enthusiastic people who are willing to commit at least 2 days per week. Basic educational skills - being able to help kids with their reading, writing and arithmetic is also necessary.
