The mission of Adult and Family Literacy is to provide adults with the opportunity to acquire and improve essential skills necessary to be self-sufficient and to be contributing citizens and productive employees.

Description:
The Literacy Program, housed in the Hawthorne Education Center, serves non-traditional learners, the majority of whom do not speak English as their first language. The population at Hawthorne Education Center includes almost 3000 adult learners each year; each day between 700-800 adult learners and sixty of their preschool children receive services at the Center. Nearly 85% of the learners live at or below the poverty level. The adult learners, age 16 to 90, come together to improve their English, to get a high school diploma, a GED and to master the life skills they need to be successful parents and citizens.

History:
Since its beginning in the 1970's as General Education Diploma (GED) Prep and volunteer reading tutor program, the Rochester Adult and Family Literacy Program has responded to the community's expanding population and cultural diversity, providing support for education, employment, health and safety resettlement.
