Young Life is an international Christian evangelical outreach to adolescents (high school/ junior high). Our vision: to train and equip adult volunteers to do relational ministry with kids by going where kids are (school activities, hanging out, etc); earning the right to be heard; and involving kids in a particular school or community in weekly Young Life meetings/ activities and in summer camping experiences. FUN, ADVENTURE, and RELATIONSHIPS characterize what we do with kids!
History:
Young Life was founded in the 1940s by a young seminary student in Dallas, TX, named Jim Rayburn. Rayburn was aware that many churches did not seem to be reaching teenage youth by the "traditional" methods. So he started doing some new things to reach kids. He would go to the local teen hang-outs and get to know kids there. He would go to football games and practices and build friendships with the players and students there. In a nutshell, Rayburn made the effort to step out the the "adult world" and into the lives of kids.As he got to know kids, Rayburn invited them to attend "Young Life Club" -- a non-threatening meeting including games, singing, and a Gospel message. Kids came--and responded to the messages--because they felt valued, understood, and because Rayburn talked about Jesus and the Truth of the Gospel in terms they could understand.Since that time, Young Life has grown to become a vibrant ministry active all over the United States and in 40 foreign countries. The key: Christ-centered adults who commit to befriending kids and earning the right to share the Gospel with them.
