History:
Creighton University Medical Center celebrates over 136 years of heritage and leadership: remaining close to its Catholic roots while responding to the community's needS in a forward-thinking manner. Omaha was only 14 years old in 1870 when the Sisters of Mercy founded Saint Joseph Hospital. It was a simple two-story frame building with 40 beds and was Omaha's first and only hospital for many years. The hospital was expanded in 1882 while caring for victims of Omaha's smallpox epidemic. The Creighton family donated funds to construct a new facility. The new hospital located on South 10th Street was named Creighton Memorial Saint Joseph Hospital. At this time the hospital began its long-term relationship with Creighton University by becoming the primary teaching hospital for Creighton University's School of MedicIne. Through the years, patient care services continued to expand at the 10th Street location. In 1949 the cornerstone for the Psychiatric Unit was laid.In 1971, the Sisters of Saint Frances transferred management of the hospital to the Creighton Omaha Regional Healthcare Corporation. As Saint Joseph celebrated its first century of caring, planning was underway to build a new facility. In 1974, ground was broken for a new $75 million hospital and patient care center. The move to our current site occurred in December 1977. Adjacent to Creighton University and its school of health sciences, the new hospital was specially designed to continue to serve as the University's primary teaching hospital. In 1984, American Medical International, one of the nation's leading health care corporations purchased the hospital. Today we are jointly owned by Tenet Health System and Creighton University. In June, 2002, the hospital changed its name from Saint Joseph Hospital to Creighton University Medical Center.
