We are an aerospace museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Strategic Air Command, military and general aviation. Our mission is to educate, inspire, and entertain visitors through high quality interactive exhibits, educational programs & ongoing restoration and preservation of historic aircraft, missiles & aerospace artifacts. We have a beautiful modern facility with over 300,000 square feet including 2 large indoor hangars, a snack bar, gift shop, flight simulator & traveling exhibits.
Description:
Large Aerospace Museum (nonprofit 501(c)3) dedicated to preserving history and educating our youth and the public at large. We have needs for volunteers in the areas of docents (tour guides and floaters), aircraft restoration, administrative work, and facilities (audio-visual, computer/network).
History:
SAC Museum was first started in 1959 with an aircraft parked on an inactive runway section at Offutt Air Force Base. In the early 1970's the Museum was taken over by the State of Nebraska and an exhibit building was built. Over the years more aircraft were added for a total of 33 aircraft and 6 missiles. In 1992, the Museum became a private non-profit organization. After being exposed to the outside elements for many years the airplanes were starting to deteriorate. So in 1996 it was announced that a new SAC Museum would be built adjacent to Mahoney State Park where the aircraft could be protected inside. On April 1, 1998, the new Museum opened and since then, over one million visitors have come through the doors. In June 2001, the museum changed its name to the Strategic Air & Space Museum.
