The mission of the Nebraska Kidney Association is to improve the lives of all Nebraskans through advocacy, education, early disease detection and patient services. The organization is funded solely by contributions from corporations, foundations and the general public. Multifaceted programs in research, patient services, public education, professional education and organ donation are also functions of the Nebraska Kidney Association.
History:
The Nebraska Kidney Association is celebrating its 40th anniversary in January, 2009.As recently as 43 years ago, the option for treatment was nearly nonexistent. Dialysis was an expensive complicated, lengthy procedure available to only a few. Kidney transplantation was unproven. In a mere 43 years, the Nebraska Kidney Association has achieved countless milestones.Nebraska Kidney Association supports medical research programs, and makes medical student research grants and other research grants available in Nebraska. Currently $3,000 research grants are committed annually to a medical student at Creighton University School of Medicine and NHS/University of Nebraska Medical Center; and $15,000 is given to Nebraska medical investigators. The Nebraska Kidney Association educates the public by providing a resource center with over 70 public and patient educational brochures provided free to the community. Kidney screenings (KEDS) are performed at various times and locations during the year. Also, Nebraska Kidney Association school education programs give elementary school students an understanding of kidney disease and increase awareness of organ donation and transplantation.Free medical alert jewelry, patient information packets, emergency financial aid and a respite care program are provided to kidney patients. Current Programs & Events include: *Cadillac Invitational Golf Tournaments - the only national amateur tournament of its kind.*Car Donation Program - donate your car to the Nebraska Kidney Association, America's #1 car donation program. *Kidney Cruise - a gala dinner Nebraska Kidney Association will continue to be faced with the challenge of the ever-increasing population of people being diagnosed with kidney disease. The responsibility grows in meeting the needs of these kidney patients, as well as the need to increase efforts in promoting prevention of kidney disease through its public education programs. Increased dollars are also vital to provide funding of medical research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of kidney and urinary tract diseases. We invite you to join us in becoming architects of the future by directly supporting our mission-driven programs and services throughout Nebraska.
