The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, that provides relief to the victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Founded by Clara Barton in 1881, the organization and its symbol stand for help and hope everywhere.
Description:
The American Red Cross Heartland Chapter provides assistance for many in our community each day. Whether it's shelter after a fire, providing life-giving blood products, teaching life-saving skills, or helping during a disaster, we are there with assistance and words of support. Some of the services provided by the Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross are as follows: assisted families victimized by home fires and other disasters; fed people within our 4 county service area through the Red Cross emergency food pantry; assisted armed forces personnel and their families assigned around the world; trained more than 50,000 people in CPR, first aid and water safety courses at sites throughout our service area, including Offutt Air Force Base.
History:
The Omaha Chapter of the American Red Cross was formed four days after America entered World War I in 1917. The Midwest Blood Region promotes the Blood Service division of the Red Cross. The Heartland Chapter provides Community Health and Safety Services, Disaster and Emergency Services, in addition to providing support for the Blood Region. As a volunteer, you can be a CPR or first aid instructor, work with the elderly, transport blood products or respond to area fires and floods as a disaster team worker. Volunteer opportunities also include, clerical support, data entry, case work, and driving opportunities.
