Vision: Productive Lands-Healthy Environment Mission: Helping People Help the Land
Description:
NRCS works one-on-one with landowners to help them manage and protect the natural resources on their property. In Nebraska, NRCS works predominately with farmers and ranchers. NRCS has field offices in nearly every county in the state. Field office employees work with local individuals in the conservation of natural resources. NRCS has several programs that provide technical and financial assistance to landowners in installing conservation measures. Conservation measures include: buffer strips, terraces, waterways, shelterbelts, wetland restoration, wildlife habitat protection/creation, and much more.
History:
The Natural Resources Conservation Service was originally called the Soil Conservation Service. The Service began back in 1930's during the dust bowl years. It worked with farmers to help reduce soil erosion on their farmland. Since that time the role of SCS/NRCS has grown to include much more than just soil erosion. NRCS works with the conservation of all natural resources on private lands.
