Heartland Railroad Historical Society was formed with the purpose of preserving and restoring former railroad structures in a way that will enhance their historical integrity while benefiting the public both educationally and economically.
Description:
Our primary focus is railroad structures that are of value to our communities. We are based out of Omaha and everybody involved is volunteer and contributes when time permits. Railroad structures are typically overlooked by the preservation community even though they are a gateway to our past. These structures have served an important purpose in the past and have the potential to do the same in the future. It is because of this importance that this organization has the purpose of assisting in making the potential importance into reality. Two particular types of structures we are focusing on are roundhouses and stations. Potential reuse opportunities include but are not limited to railroad interpretive museums, transportation outlets, and commercial incubators.
History:
The organization was formed in May of 1998 by volunteers. Our first project involved the roundhouse in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Efforts to restore this building into a railroad museum are still underway. We are currently proposing a far larger project in Omaha, Nebraska. Our current proposal entails the restoration of the Burlington Station located at 10th and Pacific streets into an intermodal transportation hub. This project will act as a historic alternative gateway by way of current and future means of transportation.
