Camp Quality Heartland
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on February 12, 2008

Camp Quality is a non-profit volunteer organization providing a camping experience and much more for children with cancer.

Camp Quality programs provide opportunities for fun and innovative experiences in settings with trained and caring volunteers. Through these experiences, children with cancer are allowed to be children again.
Hope for the future is fostered by the camper's anticipation of the next camp or camp activity and through fun camp memories. It is this anticipation that can sustain children as they continue their medical treatment.

Camp Quality provides families of children with cancer a much needed rest while their child attends camp. Companions and expert medical staff ensure the safety of children attending camp.

Description:
Camp Quality Heartland provides a camping experience and ongoing support to children with cancer and their families. Campers are children ages 3-18 who have been diagnosed with cancer or are the sibling of a child with cancer. Most campers reside in Iowa or Nebraska.

Companions are adults who are paired with one camper during camp and maintain an ongoing relationship with their camper and his/her family. To be accepted as a companion, an individual must be at least 18 years-old, complete an application, and successfully pass reference and police background checks. All volunteers must attend a mandatory training each year.

In addition to a camping experience, Camp Quality Heartland provides activities for campers, their families, and volunteers throughout the year.

History:
The Camp Quality Heartland Camp Organizing Committee (COC) was formed in 1994. The first Heartland camp occurred in June 1995 with 10 campers in attendance. Since 1995, the number of campers has increased and now averages 35. We have approximately 60 volunteers in attendance each year.

The Camp Organizing Committee is made up of volunteers who meet monthly. Meetings address camp activities, special camp events, fundraising events, camper and companion issues, and news regarding Camp Quality USA.
