Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Southwestern PA (IVC) serves older adults living independently in the greater Pittsburgh area. The mission of IVC is to maximize the independence and overcome the isolation of the frail elderly in Allegheny County.
Description:
IVC provides an array of non-medical support services to help older adults live safely and independently. These services include: escort/transportation, grocery shopping, friendly visiting, help with correspondence, snow shoveling, telephone reassurance, and home safety checks. All services are given free of charge to Allegheny County residents aged 60 or older. IVC offers one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities with its caregiving program and the Safety for Seniors initiative. SFS educates older adults about fire & fall prevention at home, provides residential safety assessments, installs smoke alarms and grab bars, and distributes other home safety supplies. IVC today fulfills an important and unique role as a gap-filler that helps meet the needs of consumers who cannot be accommodated by other senior service providers.
History:
IVC formed in 1992 as a pilot program of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation of Pittsburgh. It was established to broaden the network of informal support services available locally to older adults. IVC was developed to coordinate faith-based and community volunteers to address the in-home, non-medical needs of the frail elderly. IVC incorporated into an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1993 and has been reaching out to needy seniors through its caregiving program ever since. In 2001, IVC added Safety for Seniors to its service offerings. IVC became a Community Partnerships program of Family Services of Western Pennsylvania in October 2006.
