Description:
Since 1970, East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) has provided social services to the hungry, the homeless, the elderly, and the at-risk children and youth of Pittsburgh's economically distressed East End neighborhoods. EECM is a non-profit, faith-based, ecumenical organization whose 47 member congregations help fulfill our mission: "To join together as a racially and culturally diverse people of faith to build a loving, healthy and economically vital community in the East End of Pittsburgh."

Our ministry serves the predominately African-American population who live in the East Liberty, Garfield, Lincoln-Lemington, and Larimer neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Compared to the city as a whole, our service area's population is poorer, less educated, and less likely to be employed. East End Cooperative Ministry was created with the belief that congregations united can do more than congregations individually. The depth of service offered by our ministry is listed below.

EECM's Soup Kitchen serves hot lunches each weekday to anyone needing a nutritious noontime meal. The Food Pantry provides emergency food to East End residents, many of them parents with children. Since malnutrition is a significant cause of illness among the elderly, our Meals On Wheels program is essential to the health of the frail and homebound. The Men's Shelter provides temporary housing and support services for homeless men every day of the year. EECM operates a Drop-In Center, a hospitable environment for the homeless and mentally ill to gather and seek services. Our Bridge Housing program provides homeless men with an apartment and helps them make the transition from crisis shelter to independent living. PennFree Housing is a 12-month program that offers subsidized housing and supportive counseling for recovering addicts and their children. Safe Haven is a housing program for chronically homeless men. The Orr Center is a 14 bed, non-medical care facility that offers homeless adults and the frail elderly a place to recuperate after being discharged from local hospitals. EECM's Children and Youth Programs focus on academics, job readiness, recreation, intervention, and drug, alcohol, tobacco, and violence prevention.
