The mission of the Central Blood Bank is to collect blood and deliver comprehensive blood products and services that enable medical professionals to provide the most efficient and effective patient care.

Description:
Our mission is to save lives. We have 27 community donor centers throughout the region as well as 13 mobile units that travel to churches, schools, corporations, and organizations. We need approximately 726 registered donors per day to meet the demands of our community. We utilize volunteers in the canteen area of our blood drives and community donor centers. Volunteers are an integral part of our retention effort because they help assure donors' experiences are positive ones. Volunteers educate donors about the importance of donating regularly, observe the donors for any adverse effects, provide drinks to the donors, and thank the donors for their generous gift of time and blood.

History:
In 1950, the Central Blood Bank was established by healthcare professionals in the Pittsburgh area. In 1987 the Institute for Transfusion Medicine was formed to advance, promote, and support the purposes of CBB and other not for profit organizations. Central Blood Bank is the 4th largest blood bank in the country. We have a sister agency, LifeSource, located in Chicago.

Federated Investors Blood Drive
On Thursday, January 30, 2003, the Central Blood Bank held a blood drive at Federated. I volunteered to give blood and would like to thank Rachel, the girl who drew my blood. She was sweet, kind, gentle, and very knowlegdeable about her job. I was truly impressed by her. She was outgoing, professional, happy to be working with CBB, and just loving her job. She really made the experience enjoyable. Thanks Rachel!!!
