Last updated on December 6, 2007

The mission of Allegheny Valley School is to provide quality programs and facilities to help the individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities entrusted to our care to live with purpose and dignity, and to provide opportunities and choices for our clients to grow and function at their full potential as independently as possible.

Description:
Allegheny Valley School was founded in 1960 by Patricia Miller Hillman with the help of Bob Prince and A. Douglas Hannah. We serve children, adults, and seniors with intellectual developmental disabilities, many who also have multiple physical handicaps, medical complications, and behavioral program needs.

Allegheny Valley School provides a home and other vital services for more than 900 residents. Residential care is provided in safe and caring environments including supervised community group homes, campus settings and apartments. Each resident is cared for with individualized services that range from physical, occupational and communication therapies to special education and vocational training.

History:
It was the late 1950's and few orphanages remained. The Pittsburgh Home for Babies was ready to close after more than 50 years of caring for orphans. There were only 10 children left, but no one would adopt these children because they were babies with intellectual developmental disabilities. Patricia Hillman Miller desperately wanted to help these children. She knew what it was like to have a handicap. She had polio. In 1960, with help from Bob Prince and A. Douglas Hannah, she founded Allegheny Valley School. Throughout the past four decades, Allegheny Valley School has remained true to Patricia Hillman Miller's devotion to serving the needs of children with intellectual developmental disabilities. The school has expanded its services to meet the needs of children, adults and seniors throughout Western, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania.
