To further the independence of people in Western Pennsylvania who are blind, visually impaired, or unable to read or hold print material, by providing current information from print media and other sources not readily available to them.

Description:
Radio Information Service is a Pittsburgh based radio reading service that has the potential of over 6,500 listeners. We broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the help of more than 220 volunteers who read on the air, help with publicity, special events, and office duties. Information is provided daily from local and national newspapers, popular magazines, grocery and department store circulars and books.

History:
Radio Information Service was founded in 1976 by several blind activists. RIS originally broadcast from its studios at WDUQ Radio on Duquesne University's campus. In 1992, RIS moved its studios to the Birmingham Towers on the South Side of Pittsburgh where it still resides. RIS continues to broadcast on a sub-carrier current from WDUQ or WQED and can only be accessed by a special receiver that RIS sends to listeners for $40 per year. Listeners can also hear information from a phone dial in service or archived programs on our web site at www.readingservice.org.
