The YWCA of the United States is a women's membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the Association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people.
Description:
The YWCA works together with other agencies in the McKeesport area on the empowerment of women and helping them to achieve full self-sufficiency. Many women in our programs have overcome numerous obstacles and are beginning their lives over again, and the YWCA helps them in doing so. Aside from the affordable housing opportunities, the YWCA also offers before and after school programs as well as a 10 week summer camp for children in the Mon Valley area. We also have a gym, and other clubs and groups that a member may decide to get involved with.
History:
In 1912, women and young girls were becoming a part of the business world throughout the United States and McKeesport was a city flourishing more and more each day. The YWCA was a strong and popular bible study and Sunday school location for the McKeesport population. Cooking, sewing, gymnastics, and public affairs discussions soon came into the scene at the YWCA. The YWCA has been at its current location since 1922. Not only the city of McKeesport, but also the YWCA and its opportunities have changed to accomodate the needs of the members of the community with the economic decline and the close of the steel industry.
Although the programs may have changed, the mission still remains the same, to serve women and children in our community, so that they have all of the opportunities that a family may deserve.
