The mission of cwACT is to provide quality entertainment for the community and provide, for as many volunteers as possible, the opportunity to participate in quality theater. The goals of cwACT are to produce shows the community want to see, to promote community involvement in those shows, and to be self-sustaining. As a result, community volunteers select, produce, and fund cwACT productions.
Description:
We produce shows from scratch. A committee reviews scripts and recommends a season that includes a musical and two plays. Directors are selected from applicants and a production staff is organized. Auditions are held, a cast is selected, and rehearsal, costuming, props, set construction, publicity, and other activities culminate with performances at Sentry Theater. If you have ever participated in drama in school, whether it was grade school, high school, or college, and would like to continue to scratch your creative itch, we are your thing. We have people from novices to professionals participating. If you are interested in any area of production there is likely someone here with training and experience to take you under their wing. Theater is not just actors on stage, but stage managers and make-up artists and seamstresses and carpenters and house managers and antiques aficionados for props and musicians and assistant directors and - you get the picture. Shows generally average about 4 'techies" per actor seen on stage! We also have a board of directors with vacancies! Production periods generally run about 8 weeks from initial production meeting to final show and strike, so commitments are for the term of the particular production.
History:
In 1973, Dr. Tom O'Malley and UWSP Theater Arts Professor Tony Schmitt saw a need in the community for an amateur theater group. They, along with the help of other community minded individuals, established the Area Community Theater or ACT. In 1980 the group became incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit enterprise. The name officially changed to Central Wisconsin Area Community Theater, Ltd. or cwACT.
