The Root River Environmental Education Community Center (REC) is a collaborative effort between UW-Parkside and the City of Racine aimed at fostering environmental stewardship in SE Wisconsin through environmental education, recreation, demonstration and research.
Description:
The Root River Environmental Education Community Center (REC)is a partnership between the University of WI-Parkside, the City of Racine Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services, and local business, civic, conservation and educational associations. REC aims to provide Environmental Education and offer equipment rental for use on the Root River and Lake Michigan (canoes, kayaks, fishing poles, bicycles). REC uses/displays innovative eco-friendly residential and industrial systems and products, highlighting affordable and practical sustainable methods for commercial and residential applications.
History:
REC is the product of a common vision held by community leaders, university professors and area educators, sports groups, and conservation groups. The initial conversation for the REC was the product of foresight and conversation between Mayor Becker and UW-Parkside's Professor Skalbeck. Access to the REC facility at 1301 6th Street, Racine, WI granted by the City of Racine was finalized in 2007. Regular updates available at: http://www.reccedar.blogspot.com
