The Association for the Blind seeks to improve the quality of life for the visually impaired through services, programs and advocacy by promoting independence and self-sufficiency and helping individuals participate fully in their community.
Description:
The Association for the Blind provides the only comprehensive vision rehabilitation program in South Carolina serving individuals who have suffered severe vision loss. The Living Well with Partial Vision program provides in-home services by occupational therapists who teach self-care and home-management skills to help patients live independently and safely in their home environments. Computer training is offered through a collaboration with the S.C. Commission for the Blind. The courses are free of charge and offer instruction in JAWS and ZoomText, which are screen reading and magnification software programs designed for the blind and visually impaired.
The Association also employs vision-impaired individuals who re-cane chairs for community members who have a need for that service.
History:
The Association for the Blind was chartered in 1937 and has been serving the blind and vision impaired of Charleston and the tri-county since that time. Services in addition to the Living Well with Partial Vision program, computer instruction and chair caning include social events, beepball, and a fishing trip as well as assistance through the Good Cheer Fund of the Post and Courier.

From North: Take I-26E to exit 219B, Morrison Dr./East Bay exit. Turn left at base of exit ramp following sign to Morrison Dr. Proceed through 3 traffic lights and the Association is located in the second building on the right past the third light. (Notice chimneys on top of building). Turn right into driveway with cream-colored stucco fence.
From Mt. Pleasant: From Arthur Ravenel Bridge, 17S, take the first Charleston exit: Morrison Drive/East Bay. Turn right and proceed .5 mile and after reaching the "School 25 mph with yellow lights" sign overhead, turn left into driveway surrounded by cream-colored stucco fence. The building features chimneys on top and is located between Lord & Evans Paint Store and Bird Decorative Hardware.
From South: Take 17N to the Romney Street exit. At the foot of the exit ramp turn right and proceed four blocks east to Morrison Drive. Turn left and proceed .2 mile and after reaching the "School 25 mph with yellow lights" sign overhead, turn left into driveway surrounded by cream-colored stucco fence. The building features chimneys on top and is located between Lord & Evans Paint Store and Bird Decorative Hardware.
