Volunteers (skilled and unskilled) do the construction on Habitat houses. A professional supervisor is on site to teach volunteers the needed skills. Many Habitat volunteers learn valuable skills for maintaining or repairing their own houses. Our partner families work on site as well. Habitat is a great way to meet people of varied backgrounds. Volunteers are asked to work at least a half day so that time isn't wasted in repeatedly orienting volunteers to the day's task. While many volunteers are interested in hurricane recovery, Rapides Habitat for Humanity is NOT specifically building for recovery, although we have several partner families who evacuated and resettled here following Hurricane Katrina. Our area was physically unaffected by Katrina and is located several hundred miles north of the storm ravaged area.
Volunteers must sign up for a specific workday to be sure that the site isn't overcrowded or that work hasn't been canceled due to weather or subcontractor problems. You must be age 16 to work construction. Groups may sign up as a group, but should be no larger than 15-20 volunteers. This opportunity is sponsored by: Rapides Habitat For Humanity
