Prison Book Project
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on April 18, 2008

Prison Book Project is a secular, all-volunteer collective working to distribute books free of charge to people imprisoned in New England and Texas. We are dedicated to offering men and women behind bars the opportunity for self-empowerment, education, and entertainment that reading provides.

Description:
Prison Book Project receives approximately 200 letters each month from men and women imprisoned in New England and Texas. We respond to these individual requests, making selections from our inventory of donated books. We then prepare packages for mailing, using donated brown paper bags. Our nearly exclusive expenses are for packing tape and media rate postage.

We work with volunteers on a drop-in basis every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. We also accept donations of gently used paperback books at this time. With advance notice, we can arrange to work with groups of up to 20 individuals for one-time volunteer opportunities.

History:
Prison Book Project (PBP) was established more than ten years ago and continues to operate as an all-volunteer collective. The group's mission has remained the same: to send books free-of-charge to men and women who are imprisoned.

Originally PBP worked out of First Churches in Northampton, Massachusetts. For a brief period, we worked out of the office of The Performance Project. Currently, we are housed at the North Hadley Congregational Church in space donated to us by the church.
