The mission of Catholic Charities is to provide for the needs of our community through selfless service under the sign of love. We are committed to empowering individuals and families in our community and beyond with the goal of fostering independence.
Description:
For the past 66 years, the agency’s focus has been to empower individuals and families in need to discover and enhance their own resources, as well as develop viable coping skills that will improve their personal and social functioning. We provide services without regard to gender, race, creed, religion, disability, national origin, or socioeconomic status. We provide 21 bilingual and culturally sensitive programs that empower individuals and families in our community to become self-sufficient. Our programs fall under the following seven divisions: Family & Children Services; Counseling Services; Family Self-Sufficiency Services; Legal Services; Senior Community Services; Elder Care Services; and Migration Services. Within the past few years Catholic Charities has expanded it services to the community by bringing other organizations under its umbrella, including Senior Community Services in 1999, Catholic Counseling & Consultation Center and Guadalupe Home in 2001, San Antonio Birth Doulas in 2005, and Guadalupe Community Center in 2006.
History:
In 1941, Catholic Charities,Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. was established as the Catholic Welfare Board, functioning as a social service agency of the San Antonio Archdiocese. In 1965, the agency was incorporated in the state of Texas as a nonprofit organization, changing its name to Catholic Family and Children Services, Inc. In 1995, the agency became part of the Catholic Charities national social service system and changed to its current name.
