The American Lung Association of the Central States serving Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. The mission is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. The mission is accomplished through education, research, and advocacy.

Description:
The American Lung Association of the Central States is an affiliate of the American Lung Association. The agency is one of the nation's oldest voluntary health organizations founded in 1908 and dedicated to promoting lung health and fighting for clean air and tobacco control through education, research, and advocacy. More than 35 million Americans are living with chronic lung disease. Every year, over 342,000 Americans die of lung disease, making it the nation's number three killer responsible for 1 in 7 deaths. The organization provides education and outreach in reference to lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

History:
The agency offers asthma management and tobacco control programs to parents, caregivers, children,school personnel and healthcare professionals. The organization implemented asthma managment programs such as Open Airways for Schools and Counting on You to school districts and childcare centers in Bexar County for the past ten years. Teens Against Tobacco (TATU) a tabacco control program for offered to school districts and community centers. The San Antonio community initiative staff is working to enhance patient education and want to recruit individuals with a health care or health related background to volunteer for education and outreach. The organization has an annual Walk for Asthma event held at SeaWorld each year. Special event volunteers and individuals interested in adminstrative assignments are always welcome.
