The mission of Healy-Murphy Center is to provide compassionate service to youth-in-crisis by focusing on individualized education in a non-traditional setting, early childhood development, and essential support services.
Description:
These at-risk youth have, for a variety of reasons, been unable to experience success in a traditional school setting. By providing essential education services in a program that allows for independent study and self-paced initiative, vocational and social counseling, wellness services, childcare support, and two nutritious meals a day, Healy-Murphy Center has empowered these young people to graduate from high school or complete their G.E.D., to become caring and responsible parents, and to succeed as productive citizens. Each year we serve approximately 400 at-risk youth ages 14 to 21 and approximately 200 infants and children at the Child Development Center. Nearly 50% of our students are either pregnant and/or already parenting teenagers and approximately 25% of the total enrollment is homeless. Approximately 80% of our students have incomes of less than $15,000 and more than 90% of the students enrolled are eligible for free or reduced meals.
History:
When the Sisters of the Holy Spirit opened its doors in 1888 as St. Peter Claver Academy, it was a school for African-American children. With the advent of integration, the name and mission of the school were changed. Healy-Murphy Center was the first alternative high school in Texas in 1970. It became a place where pregnant and/or parenting teens, high school dropouts, and any other student having problems in a traditional school environment, could receive assistance in completing their high school education.
