The goal of the Youth Mariachi & Cultural Arts Program is to provide disadvantaged youth from San Antonio and all of Bexar County sectors the opportunity to learn Mariachi and Latino music ? especially those who are unable to participate in such music programs due to lack of financial limitations.

Description:
This program will assist in promoting cultural awareness and a deeper understanding of all aspects of the Hispanic heritage. This will be accomplished through a highly sensitive, formal program which will develop their musical skills. Included in the formatted program is the ability to read music, play different musical instruments, and develop vocal skills as well as performance skills.
This will be accomplished by developing their appreciation and love for Hispanic music. Ultimately, these young people will develop a strong appreciation for Mariachi music and enhance their knowledge of historical facts and artistic growth which is not taught through our present educational system.

The educational goal is commingled with their cultural awareness simultaneously with the development of their musical skills, which will enhance their scholastic aptitude. The curriculum demands the mastering of three to four instruments. All who complete this program will earn opportunities to obtain scholarships from different universities and other institutes of higher learning. Currently, Musicales de Tejas, Inc. offers musical and vocal programs for the development of Mariachi and Latino music in San Antonio?s youth. Our Youth Mariachi Music & Cultural Arts Program provides students with the opportunity to read music, play different musical instruments, and develop vocal skills as well as performance skills. Through this program, we teach other Mexican music and folklore. We have found this program develops each student?s appreciation of Mexican and Hispanic music, which goes far to promote cultural awareness and a deeper understanding of all aspects of the Hispanic heritage. Further program value includes the following:
? Musicales de Tejas, Inc. has been offering classes successfully since early 1970?s. Instruments and trajes (costumes) are furnished at no cost. The students in these classes are primarily Hispanic, but the classes are open to all races. We offer beginner and advanced programs. Boys with two or more years' experience can apply for Mariachi Infantil de San Antonio. The comparable girls? program is Rositas De San Antonio.

? These evening classes are offered under the direction of Alejandro Ramirez, founder of Musicales de Tejas, Inc. Mr. Ramirez has over 32 years' experience with Mariachi programming. The musical instructors for these classes consist of four experienced adult Mariachi volunteers. We take pride in knowing that some of our students are now certified teachers in the Texas Public School Systems.
? It is anticipated that upon completion of the Youth Mariachi Music & Cultural Arts Program, our students will be able to play three to four instruments. Such skills will improve their chances to obtain scholarships at different universities and other institutes of higher learning.
