Provide low income persons with disabilities access to medical equipment, supplies, and other services which enable them to live as independently as possible and remain contributing members of the community.
Description:
Project Mend has 4 programs. MEDICAL EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM Through this program service, we receive previously owned medical equipment from the greater community and businesses, refurbish, repair, and sanitize these items, then loan them to low-income persons with disabilities at no cost to them. The medical equipment is loaned to the client for a minimum of one year, with the option of extending the loan agreement for an additional year as necessary. FITTED MOBILITY PROGRAM This program service helps clients pay for prosthetic devices and diabetic shoes and supplies. Project MEND assists with obtaining these specialized items that are not in our inventory. We have established an agreement with the University Hospital System that enables us to pay for a maximum of $500 per client for the purchase of these items that are at a reduced price for the client. If the client has insurance, the balance is covered through the insurance, and if not, the client pays the balance.
INFORMATION & REFERRAL SERVICES Project MEND works together with various social service agencies to find supportive community and business resources, as well as provide in-home assessments and assistance for those in situations when traveling is not an option. Clients are often referred to other social service agencies for additional services they may require. JEREMIAH’S PROGRAM This program was established specifically for VETERANS in honor of SSG Jeremiah C. Geffre and other brave servicemen and women who have proudly served our country. The purpose of this program is to provide veterans access to all of Project MEND’s program services, particularly when their VA benefits do not cover costs or provide services for non-service related injuries or illnesses; and for veterans that are experiencing a long wait time for medical equipment or fitted mobility services from the VA.
History:
Mobility and independence are basic human rights, and we at Project MEND encourage that for all individuals, regardless of their financial limitations. Established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1993, Project MEND, also known as the Medical Equipment Network for those with Disabilities, has been providing for the medical equipment needs of low-income persons with disabilities in San Antonio and surrounding counties for over a decade.
